Frequently Asked Questions

What do you get as a member?

Lessons on Making Comics, exercises, in-class critiques, virtual bullpen (co-working) sessions, guest speaker interviews, blog and access to the online community of supportive fellow aspiring comic and graphic novel creators.

Is there an actual course?

Yes. Lessons and exercises are held weekly via Zoom as well as pre-recorded. You can choose to do one or the other or both. All lessons are in "bite-sized" 10 min. chunks allowing you to easily process and rewatch at your own pace.

Who should join?

If you've always wanted to be a comic creator for a long time but have little time to and energy to spare, then this is for you. While the goal is to make comics, this is geared for people with day jobs and therefore more flexible and less intense.

How long before I'm making comics?

While new lessons will be introduced over the course of a year, you should gain enough basic skills to make your own comics within a few weeks. The lessons we will introduce later in the course will focus on making you better.

Is this a live course?

It's a hybrid, Live online classes are held weekly but the lessons are also available as short pre-recorded videos. You can also participate in discussions, share your work for feedback or ask question during the live class sessions.

Do you offer an in-person course?

While we are based in New York City, we are open to holding one-day or week-long workshops at other locations based on requests. Please email us if this is something you're interested in for your city and stay tuned for more updates.

What is a Virtual Bullpen?

A bullpen is a studio where everyone works alongside each other. Today, most comic work is done remotely by freelancers. This is an effort to bring back those days of camaraderie and socialization that comes from working in a studio.

Will you help me get published?

No one can guarantee you that result. The best we can do is give you all the skills and tools you need to make you more attractive to a publisher. However, we will teach you how to self-publish in print and online and how to crowdfund.

Will you produce an anthology?

If there is enough material and that is something that the group wants to take on as a goal, then we're certainly up for it. We've done it before and we can do it again. And it's certainly a great learning experience .

Do you have to be an adult?

While anyone can theoretically take the course regardless of age, many of the concepts might be  more appropriate for grown-ups. However we do plan to offer one-day or week-long workshops to teens. Please email us if you are interested.

What if I have zero talent or skills?

As long as you're willing to learn, we're willing to teach you. Skills are learnable with the right knowledge and lots of practice. Many successful creators today can't really draw. If they can do it, so can you!

What if I'm not satisfied?

You can cancel a monthly subscription anytime. For annual subscribers, we only give refunds for unused months. Refund requests must be made via email.

Can I join at anytime?

Yes, we have an open enrollment policy, but while the pre-recorded lessons are given in a specific sequence, the live class lessons discuss the latest topic. But you may present your work for feedback at anytime.

What are the organizer's credentials?

Ramon is a working creator who has been published by Dynamite, Vortex, Pronto, Atlas Unleashed, Bleeding Cool, the Beat and more. He organizes workshops, panels and comic cons and teaches art at the university level.

What will happen if I don't join?

Nothing. And that's okay. But we do believe in the saying that "If you keep on doing what you've always done, you will keep on getting what you've always gotten." So if you want a different result, then you have do something different.

Will my subsciption ever increase?

No, the price you paid when you first signed up will be the price you will always pay for as long as you remain a continuous member. However, the price may increase for new members AFTER you. So we highly encourage joining early.

Why do I have to pay?

Organizing this community and producing content takes time and effort. True, you can probably find these lessons for free elsewhere, but we organize and distill the information to make it easier and more convenient for you to process.

What about the Meetup/FB groups?

The Meetups with guest speakers and the general Facebook group is free and great for people to connect and get a glimpse into the workshop. However there is a members-only FB group for discussions, posting work and feedback.
